Gilbert Mitullah obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Science degree in Comparative and International Education from St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford. He also leads the Africa Justice and Restoration Trust (AJAR) which offers pro bono legal representation for remand prisoners in Kenya’s prisons. In his work there, he has helped to secure the release of wrongfully imprisoned people. He has a robust background as a law lecturer, education innovator and as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Gilbert is passionate about criminal law and criminal justice reform in Kenya, with a particular interest in the right to legal representation and how this affects fair trial and access to justice.
Since 2009, Gilbert has been actively involved as a mentor in the President’s Digital Talent Mentorship Program (PDTP) and is a Global Shaper alumnus with the World Economic Forum.

For his efforts, Gilbert was identified as one of the 100 Most Influential Young Kenyans of 2016 in the Education category.
